The Lincoln Memorial was the first stop on our family adventure. People sat on the steps to check out the view that Lincoln had from his chair. Straight ahead was the Washington Memorial…the landmark of D.C.! We read the quotes of his speeches on the walls and talked to the kids about Lincoln’s role in ending slavery. There is something unreal that happens when you are standing on ground that was covered with folks coming to hear Martin Luther King speak. I love what Lincoln represents for our country and the respect that is shown in the capital for his legacy. I learned all this stuff when I went to Snowshoe Elementary and then in A.P. U.S History class and finally it all came together. Us, Abe and a thousand other people taking in the past while celebrating the future of America. Again, it was overwhelming.
